Introduction to the Mining Industry Program
Hosted at the Ekati Diamond Mine in partnership with Aurora College, Burgundy Diamond Mines and Tłı̨chǫ Investment Corporation. The two-week (120 hour) Introduction to the Mining Industry Program will introduce participants to the mining industry in Canada and the NWT. This will include providing an understanding of careers in underground and surfacing mining and mineral processing based on the Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MIHR) National Occupational Standards. In this program, students will be introduced to the industrial workplace; mining operations in Canada and the NWT; mining career opportunities; life at NWT mines; mine safety; and mine equipment used in the northern mining environment.
What You Need To Know:
- 12 slots available
- You will stay at the Ekati mine camp for two (2) weeks during January 8 – 22 2025; training/learning for 12 hours a day to reflect the reality of working at the mines.
- Site safety training required, Pavilion, which can be completed upon arrival.
- For those selected, flights, accommodations, food and meals are provided. PPE will be provided if/when required.
Program Objective:
The primary objective of the program is to provide a basic understanding of mining and processing operations to enable participants to make an informed choice on possible mining careers. Instruction may include guest speakers, classroom, and other activities.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Registered Tłı̨chǫ citizen*
- Minimum 18-28 years of age prior to January 8, 2025
- Minimum of Grade 9 Mathematics and English, and/or successful completion of Adult Basic Education or equivalent with transcripts
- Submission of a clear or confirmed Criminal Records Check (for security clearance to Ekati).
- Available for January 8 – 22 2025.
*Preference provided to individuals who have not had much previous exposure to the mining industry but are keen and curious to learn more about potential career opportunities in the mining industry.
Applicant Submission Requirements:
- Completed application form
- Updated resume
- One form of photo identification (proof of age)
- High school, post secondary and/or ABE transcripts
- Clear or confirmed Criminal Records Check (completed within the last 6 months)
Upon selection, successful applicants will be required to further complete a Confidential Medical Questionnaire for medical clearance at Ekati.
